SIGNAL ATTENUATION

Data signals become progressively weaker as they travel through network media. Attenuation of data signals is more of a problem with some network media than with others. Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) is generally the most susceptible to attenuation, while fiber-optic cable is the most resistant.

Repeaters (devices that retransmit signals on a network) are often used when signal attenuation is a concern.
