SIGNAL
ATTENUATION
Data signals become
progressively weaker as they travel through network media. Attenuation of
data signals is more of a problem with some network media than with
others. Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) is generally the most susceptible to
attenuation, while fiber-optic cable is the most resistant.

Repeaters (devices
that retransmit signals on a network) are often used when signal
attenuation is a concern.
